Xi Bassile Selected Among the Winners of the ArchDaily 2026 Next Practices Awards

Maputo, Mozambique — 2026

Xi Bassile has been selected as one of the 20 winners of the ArchDaily 2026 Next Practices Awards, an international recognition celebrating practices that are expanding the possibilities of architecture and design in response to contemporary challenges.

For Xi Bassile, this recognition represents an important moment for a practice developing Nature-Based Solutions and green infrastructure for more resilient urban environments in Mozambique.

Our work sits at the intersection of infrastructure, ecology, water management and design.

We believe that addressing urban challenges such as flooding, stormwater runoff and water pollution requires approaches that consider how different systems interact, rather than treating each challenge in isolation.

This perspective informs the development of solutions such as our bioswale and PlanterBox systems, which explore how infrastructure can work with natural processes to manage rainwater.

The bioswale approach explores the use of repurposed materials to create systems that can capture and manage stormwater while contributing to more resilient urban environments.

Our PlanterBox system brings rainwater management to the building scale, providing a way to capture, filter and store rooftop runoff while integrating water management into everyday urban spaces.

These solutions reflect a broader question that guides our work:

How can we design infrastructure that works with nature instead of working against it?

Being selected for the ArchDaily Next Practices Awards places this work within an international conversation about the evolving role of architecture, design and related practices in addressing environmental and social challenges.

It also highlights the potential of solutions developed from the realities of African cities to contribute to wider conversations on climate adaptation and urban resilience.

We are honoured to be recognised alongside practices from different parts of the world and grateful to ArchDaily for providing a platform for emerging approaches to be seen, discussed and shared globally.

From Maputo, we continue to explore how nature, infrastructure and design can work together to build cities that are better prepared for the future.

Designing with nature. Building for resilience.
