Xi Bassile Recognised as #1 of 1000 Ocean Startups
Maputo, Mozambique — 2026
Xi Bassile has been recognised as #1 of 1000 Ocean Startups, a milestone that highlights the relevance of our work at the intersection of urban resilience, water management and ocean health.
Although much of our work takes place within cities, our relationship with the ocean is never far away.
Rainwater moves through streets, drainage systems, rivers and wetlands before reaching aquatic ecosystems. Along the way, it can carry waste, sediments and pollutants from urban areas into waterways and eventually the ocean.
This connection is central to Xi Bassile's approach.
Through Nature-Based Solutions and green infrastructure, we explore practical ways to manage water closer to its source, reduce pressure on conventional drainage systems and improve the relationship between cities and natural ecosystems.
Our work includes solutions such as bioswales and rainwater-harvesting systems, designed to capture, slow, filter and store stormwater while creating additional environmental value within urban spaces.
Being recognised among 1000 Ocean Startups reinforces our belief that protecting aquatic ecosystems requires action across entire systems, including the cities where much of the water journey begins.
For us, ocean innovation is not only about what happens at sea.
It is also about how we design the places where water begins its journey.
From Mozambique, Xi Bassile continues to develop locally relevant solutions that connect urban infrastructure, water management, climate resilience and healthier aquatic ecosystems.
We are grateful to the 1000 Ocean Startups community for recognising this work and for creating space for innovative approaches to a more resilient and ocean-positive future.
